The Durban Tabletop Club

Since February of 2025, I've been the chairperson of the Durban Tabletop Club (DTC), formerly known as the Durban War Games Club (DWGC). The club has been around in one form or another since 1969!

Our main focus is Warhammer, but we do play other tabletop wargames, and our members also dabble in tabletop roleplaying games (such as DnD, Daggerheart, etc.). Of course, a lot of our players are also actively involved in TCGs (mainly MTG) and board games.

What I play

Warhammer 40,000

I have been playing 40k since the launch of 9th edition. My first army was T'au army featuring a mixture of battle suits and infantry, but while I enjoyed the aesthetics, I did not actually enjoy playing as the T'au. I ended up selling my army as 9th edition wound down and started moving towards the Ruinous Powers.

I have a collection of Slaanesh-y Chaos marines that I use to play either Chaos space Marines (CSM), or Emperor's Children. Mostly I play as CSM. I'd say I'm a middling player in my local scene. I enjoy playing CSM a heck of a lot more than my previous T'au army!

My head canon is that my army is a ragtag band of renegades, wandering legionaries, and piratical raiders brought together by a charismatic leader. My CSM army is a collection of standard GW models, kit bashes, secondhand refurbished models, and a few 3D printed/lasercut models.

Here are some pics of my warband of assorted ne'er-do-wells:

Age of Sigmar

I started playing AOS in 2024, but only really started to put together an army in 2025. My army is a Bronze Age-styled Hedonites of Slaanesh force. They're far more aesthetically coherent than my 40k band of misfits, and are far harder to handle! It took me a while to get the hang of things and at present I'd say that like with 40k, I'm a middling player in the local league. At least I'm having fun!

Kill Team

I did NOT enjoy the first edition of Kill Team (released in 2018 if I recall correctly). However, I have been an avid player since the release of the second edition in 2021. In that time, I've played variously as T'au, Chaos Space Marines, Orks, and Astartes. I think my most enjoyable games have been with the Ork Kommandos (obligatory WAAAAGH!), and the Chaos Legionaries.

Here are some pics of my teams:

Blood Bowl

I definitely do not play enough Blood Bowl! It is immensely enjoyable. I usually play with my Black Orc team (which I bought built and unpainted from a friend who never got round to using them after he bought the second season box set!), but I am rather fond of my halflings. Those little goobers are fantastic when thrown around by freemen!

Here are my two teams in all their glory:

Other games

In addition to the Games Workshop systems mentioned above, I'm a big fan of Field of Glory 2 (available on Steam), and the ship-to-ship skirmish game Scabz. I've scratch-built two scab steamers using tins of Lucky Star brand sardines for the hull.

Behold: The SS Lucky Star!

and the SS Middlecut!
